Αγιος Νικόλαος

This former monastery is now the island Cathedral. Saint Nicholas, or Aghios Nikolaos to give him his Greek name, is the patron saint of all seafarers in the Orthodox canon. On Spetses, as in many other places in Greece you can find his church right next to the harbour.

The actual church inside those doors is quite surprisingly small; many of the congregation often have to stand outside for the bigger services. And as this is the island cathedral we get an extra day's holiday here on the feast day of St. Nick every December 6th!

Another of Spetses' famous 'pebble yards' stretches out in front of the church.
