January 6th

A tradition that not many tourists get to see...

On the morning of January 6th every year the local priests (at all harbours around Greece) will hold a service by the waterside to bless the year and bring good fortune for seafarers for the year.

Then a wooden cross is hurled into the water and the local young men dive in to the chilly waters to retrieve it. Whoever claims the cross will, apparently be blessed with good luck for the year.
