Athens based ceramicist, Panos Valsamakis was briefly heralded as 'the next big thing' in Greek art during the 1950s. In reality his star never really hit the heights, but he left behind some beautiful work that combines traditional Greek elements with modernism.

During the 1950s he was commissioned to created 12 ceramic panels on Spetses to decorate and identify the shops around the Dapia harbour.

This Cafe sign is one of the 5 panels that still exist in 2011. Thankfully, it appears that the value of these surviving pieces has now been recognised and work has been done to conserve them.

The others? Who knows? 3 have vanished during 'refurbishments' since I have been living here, the others went awol long ago.
