Water Supply

Day and night you can usually find one of these small tankers tied up on the Dapia quay. They bring the fresh water supply to the island.

There are a few wells and cisterns on the island and at one time every household would save all the winter rains in underground tanks to keep them supplied with water in the summer. But the local supply is insufficient for the needs of the island. Indeed, this lack of a good natural water source is sometimes cited as a major reason for Spetses' lack of development in ancient times.

Today we have a small fleet of ships that bring water across from springs on the mainland. It is pumped from here up to a huge storage tank, high up in the hillside to provide pressure in the system to supply the town.

The system works! Usually, pretty well too.
